Since there are national elections in Germany in three weeks, September 27th, there is now an online quiz by the office for public political education:

You have to answer to 38 questions, and in the end, the correlation of your answers is compared to the major parties in Germany.

They even have an English version of this quiz online:

    2009 Bundestag election Wahl-O-Mat

I'm curious to see where you fall on the German political spectrum!

The 5 major political parties in Germany are (their result in 2005 in brackets):

    Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU): conservative (35.2%)
    Social Democrats (SPD): center-left (34.2%)
    Free Democrats (FDP): libertarian (9.8%)
    Left Party (Linke): socialist (8.7%)
    Green Party (B'90/Grüne): environmentalist center-left (8.1%)

There are smaller parties too, not represented in the parliament, because they are below the 5% margin, as for example:

    National Democrats (NPD): neo-Nazis
Pirate Party (Piraten): against copyright laws and for internet freedom
BüSo: German offspring of Lyndon LaRouche's weird political sect

    My result:

    1. Pirate Party (Pirates): 77 out of 102 points
    2. Green Party (environmentalist center-left)): 74 out of 102
    3. Free Democrats (libertarians): 72 out of 102
    4. Social Democrats (center-left): 66 out of 102
    5. Left Party (socialists): 66 out of 102
    6. Christian Democrats (conservative): 48 out of 102
    7. BüSo (LaRouche): 46 out of 102
    8. National Democrats (neo-Nazis): 43 out of 102

Since the Pirate Party has no realistic chance of reaching more than 5% of the votes and my vote would be lost if I voted for them, I'll most likely go for the Green Party on September 27th.

What's your result? Whom would you vote for if living in Germany? :)

Looks like you have the highest correlation with the libertarians. Congratulations! :D

BP is a small regional Bavarian party IIRC, DVU is a far-right party, "Tierschutzpartei" translates as "party for the protection of animals".

I did it all but lost my results :(

I know that I scored well against the FDP, and also the Pensioners

My ranking amongst these parties, in order: Green, Left, FDP, SPD, CDU. If we include the other parties, I was closer to the Pirate Party and PSG, than the Greens, but I highly disagree with the PSG on the issue of planned economies, so I consider that a fluke.

Yes, that's a weakness of this quiz, also regarding other anti-system parties like the neo-Nazi NPD:

Among these 38 questions, there are only very few which ask for your opinion towards the representative democratic system. The only question that comes to mind is question #38, which asks whether democracy is the best possible form of government. So when you are in favor of, say, animal protection, you already get a certain correlation with anti-system parties, when they are incidentally in favor of animal protection too -- even if you strongly disagree with them on the system question.

At any rate, your result is interesting. It seems you are left-leaning, also for German standards.

Wait ... you are American ... yet you are not ashamed of being a librul pinko commie?

In seriousness, I'm glad you enjoyed the quiz. It's interesting you have most in common with the socialist Left Party, which is clearly left to anything that exists in America.

I wonder where the more right-leaning American posters here would fall on the German spectrum. Too bad there are no questions about a legalization of private gun ownership, a ban on abortion or whether you think Merkel has the German citizenship, or even is a communist sleeper, because she used to live in communist East Germany! :D

It is interesting, since I was once a member of the American Socialist Party but do own a gun and don't necessarily agree with those who define a human embryo as something other than a person. I wonder, if a wider range of issues were presented in the quiz, which party's platform I'd be closest to representing.

Okay people, lets get one thing straight: The NPD is not a "neo-nazi" party! They represent the German nation and German people... so heres a hint: that does not make them nazis! When will people get over the holocaust! So the nazis killed millions, let me tell you how many countries (even today) are committing genocide! But no, everyone has to hate Germany! The NPD should be on top! They should govern Germany, because Germany should be governed by Germans who love their people and their homeland! Germans should give up the guilt of the past. Yes it was bad and it shouldn't happen again, but that does not mean that Germans should let the rest of the world and their own leaders continue to punish them for the nazi's foolishness. The NPD would save Germany and keep it German. Long live the NPD and long live Germany!

I'd vote NPD, because Germany needs to be governed by patriots. And no, they're not "neo-nazis". Get over the holocaust! That guilt will destroy Germany more than the war did, and I'm certain the NPD will not be launching any mass exterminations. People who think otherwise are morons. Germans are a great people who deserve a better future than a perpetual guilt-trip! Long live the NPD, and long live Germany!

    @wolfgang1:

The NPD is a neo-Nazi party. They don't even try to hide it. Many prominent members of that party praised Adolf Hitler in public as a great example to follow, and they have well known close ties and contacts with the militant neo-Nazi scene.

So either your don't know what you're talking about due to misinformation, or you hold neo-Nazi views and don't even realize yourself that you are one, which would explain you don't get the NPD are neo-Nazis.

I posted more information on the NPD a while back here:
    http://www.generalforum.com/law-political-theory/genuine-german-neo-nazi-party-45556.html

    Some of their stances:
    - All people without German bloodline, no matter if born or raised here, no matter if they have German citizenship, will be thrown out of Germany. That means they are in favor of stripping several million German citizens of their basic constitutional rights.
    - Open racism, for example against black soccer players who allegedly cannot represent Germany in the national team because of their skin color.
    - Open anti-Semitism and conspiracy theories (many NPD members claim democratic Germany is a "puppet state" in the hands of Jews -- vgl. slur "Judenstaat").
    - Open opposition to a free, democratic system (they defame democracy as a system controlled by -- allegedly often Jewish -- financial industry and/or Americans).
    - Denial of the Holocaust (at least allusions to denial and use of coded language, because actual open Holocaust denial is illegal in Germany).

The NPD praises Hitler, they hate blacks and Jews, they hate democracy and they deny the Holocaust. Sounds pretty Nazi to me.

I was pretty much in par with the FDP... only seconded by CDU/CSU. The rest of them I did not agree with.
